How can the Microsoft Kinect best be used in conjunction with object and path detection algorithms to create a portable navigational aid for the blind?
Our goal is to develop a portable and cost effective device that can address the problem of indoor navigation for the blind. We plan to utilize the Microsoft Kinect's 3D imaging capabilities combined with a Windows Tablet's processing power to direct the blind users around obstacles. Through interviews with members of the blind community, we have determined the most effective means of communicating information would be through a combination of tactile and auditory feedback. With this being accomplished, we plan to begin incorporating object recognition and classification code into our prototype to further aid blind users.
